Elias Hartogs keert al snel terug naar Flakkee, na eerst zijn vrouw Adriana (Jane) te hebben herbegraven. Zij is tijdens de onderduik overleden en tijdelijk begraven in een schuurtje bij het onderduikadres. Clara Vroegindeweij-Haagens en haar kinderen Wilna en Tineke zijn niet gedeporteerd omdat Clara getrouwd is met een niet-Jood. De zes overige Joodse overlevenden van het eiland overleven de oorlog allemaal op onderduikadressen in Nederland. Er is geen Joodse eilandbewoner die de deportatie naar concentratiekampen heeft overleefd. Direct na de oorlog is dat nog niet duidelijk. Eva Gazan-Meuleman hoopt nog tot begin 1946 dat haar dochter Sebilla uit de kampen terugkeert. De offici\u00eble overlijdensverklaringen laten nog veel langer op zich wachten, tot jaren na de oorlog.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div  class='flex_column Ik was al mijn bezittingen kwijt en moest weer helemaal opnieuw beginnen. Familieleden van Dirkslandse ge\u00efnterneerde NSB\u2019ers ontvangen geldelijke steun, maar de enige Joodse overlevende van het dorp, Eva Gazan-Meuleman krijgt niets. Ook in naoorlogse lokale kranten is weinig aandacht voor het leed van Joodse medeburgers. Om ervoor te zorgen dat Joden of hun nazaten hun bezittingen weer terugkrijgen, worden er bewindvoerders aangesteld. De bewindvoerders plaatsen al snel na hun benoeming advertenties om goederen en contanten terug te krijgen. Niet iedereen is zich ervan bewust dat deze onderhandse verklaringen niet rechtsgeldig zijn. Hij is de enige mannelijke volwassen overlevende van de gemeente. Het is een Joodse vereiste dat er ten minste tien volwassen Joodse mannen aanwezig zijn om een dienst te kunnen laten plaatsvinden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tijdens de oorlog is de synagoge gebruikt als opslagplaats voor de<em> Wehrmacht<\/em>. Na de oorlog wordt het gebouw al snel verkocht aan een cafetaria-eigenaar. Debora Rood schrijft\u00a0 daarover: <em>\u2018Ik wilde de synagoge bezoeken, maar ik kon niet naar binnen. Korte tijd later werd er een ijssalon in gevestigd. Ik kon dat niet begrijpen.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De synagoge, de Joodse begraafplaats en enkele Joodse winkels zijn in juni 1942 door een groepje NSB\u2019ers beklad. Elias Hartogs dient na de oorlog daarom een aanklacht in.\u00a0 De daders worden gevonden en veroordeeld.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tijdens de oorlog is door de bezetter geen huur betaald voor het gebruik van de synagoge. Ook na de oorlog volgt er geen verrekening. De kosten voor het weer herstellen van het gebouw zijn voor de rekening van de nabestaanden. Op 13 juli 1947 wordt de Nederlands Isra\u00eblitische Gemeente van Middelharnis officieel opgeheven.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div><div  class='flex_column niet betalen van erfpachtbelasting. Hierop laat gemeente Amsterdam uitgebreid onderzoek doen naar haar handelen met betrekking tot het rechtsherstel en het naheffen van lokale belastingen. Vrijwel alle gemeenten met meer dan tien Joodse inwoners volgen met een onderzoek. Voor gemeente Goeree-Overflakkee is er dit onderzoek uitgevoerd door historica Betsy Biemond-Boer. De uitkomsten van het onderzoek zijn gepresenteerd aan de gemeenteraad op 26 september 2024.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het rechtsherstel is een langdurig en kostbaar proces. Op Goeree-Overflakkee gaat dit zeker niet sneller of persoonlijker dan elders. Dat wrange feit is te wijten aan hoe de landelijke overheid het rechtsherstel had ingericht. De gemeenten op Goeree-Overflakkee hebben zelf geen Joodse panden aangekocht. Gemeente Middelharnis huurt wel tijdens en na de oorlog een Joods pand voor de vestiging van een ambtelijk bureau en ook gemeente Dirksland huurt een Joods pand tijdens de oorlog en maakt de huur over aan de NSB\u2019er die dit pand gekocht heeft. Na de oorlog continueren zij deze huur nog enkele maanden. Voor vrijwel alle Joodse panden op Goeree-Overflakkee vindt na de oorlog administratief rechtsherstel plaats. Voor een tweetal panden lijkt dit echter achterwege te zijn gebleven. Uiteindelijk is \u00a0pas in 1955 het laatste rechtsherstel afgerond. Elias Hartogs gaat in 1947 in een bejaardenhuis in Amsterdam wonen. Jaap Cohen herstart al in de zomer van 1945 de slagerij van zijn vader. Nadat deze door de Watersnoodramp weer ernstig beschadigd raakt, verlaat ook hij het eiland. Debora Rood verkoopt in 1955 haar winkel in Middelharnis en verhuist naar Apeldoorn.
