De oorlog is in volle gang en dit schouwspel is haast dagelijks te bezichtigen. Het hoofd van de Luchtbeschermingsdienst, de heer Lokker, ziet plots een vliegtuig met grote snelheid laag overkomen. Hij kan echter niet vaststellen of dit vliegtuig neerstort dan wel weer opstijgt, omdat het uit het gezichtsveld verdwijnt. Enige tijd later, als de vliegtuigen al weer verdwenen zijn, deelt de gemeentebode, de heer Jacobus Hameete, hem mede, dat volgens meerdere ooggetuigen iets uit het vliegtuig is gevallen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-16j6dc-ac6105d578a66654ed67571bd84a3198\">\n.flex_column.av-16j6dc-ac6105d578a66654ed67571bd84a3198{\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:15px 15px 15px 15px;\nbackground-color:#e9f2f7;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-16j6dc-ac6105d578a66654ed67571bd84a3198 av_one_half  avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_half  first flex_column_div  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-11e86w-d467d04f6af475555df9021050dfe9d2 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Kort daarna verklaart de heer Franciscus van der Made dat dit voorwerp een persoon blijkt te zijn, die op een stuk landbouwgrond met suikerbieten terecht is gekomen, zo\u2019n 150 meter ten westen van de Molendijk. Omstanders die getuige zijn geweest van de val, verklaren dat de piloot uit het vliegtuig is gevallen, dan wel gesprongen, maar zonder parachute op de grond terecht gekomen is. Dit wordt bevestigd door het feit dat de parachute nog in zijn tas zit. De heer Lokker kan na het zien van het zwaar verminkte lichaam dan ook niet anders concluderen, dat deze onfortuinlijke jongeman is overleden. Uit nader onderzoek bijkt dat deze jongeman in een Amerikaans uniform van de luchtmacht is gekleed; op zijn jas is een lederen strip genaaid met de naam: R.E. Stover. Dezelfde naam wordt ook in \u00e9\u00e9n van de handschoenen teruggevonden. Verder worden op Stovers lichaam een reddingsvest, een dolk en een rubberboot gevonden. E\u00e9n van deze getuigen is samen met zijn broer onderweg naar de boer De Lint en ziet\u00a0 de piloot uit zijn toestel springen dan wel vallen. Robert, of Bob voor zijn vrienden, meldt zich op 8 november 1941 aan bij de US Army Air Corps. Na zijn militaire vliegtrainingen wordt hij toegewezen aan het 62ste Fighter Squadron van de 56ste Fighter Group. Deze groep vertrekt in januari 1943 onder leiding van de befaamde Hub Zemke naar Engeland, om deel te nemen aan de strijd tegen Nazi-Duitsland.<\/p>\n<p>Op die fatale zomerse vrijdagmorgen van 30 juli stijgt Robert \u2018Smokey\u2019 Stover vanaf de basis in Halesworth op in zijn jachtbommenwerper; de Thunderbolt P-47C met serienummer 41-6209. De missie van deze dag is het begeleiden van de terugtocht van B-17 bommenwerpers die in Duitsland hun dodelijke lading hebben afgeworpen. Het squadron waar Stover bij vliegt, heeft de taak deze vliegende forten op te vangen bij Arnhem\/Haalderen\/Tiel. Daar aangekomen, treffen zij een grote groep van wel honderd Duitse jagers van het type Bf 109 en Fw 190, die de bommenwerpers aanvallen of zich daarvoor gereed maken. Er ontstaat een hevig luchtgevecht waarbij aan beide kanten verliezen worden geleden. E\u00e9n daarvan is Robert Stover die zich in de buurt van Dordrecht in het gevecht met Duitse Fw 190\u2019s stort; een gevecht dat hij, zoals bekend, uiteindelijk zal verliezen. Het zal nooit bekend worden wat zich in het luchtruim precies heeft afgespeeld, maar de angst die de jonge piloot moet hebben gevoeld toen hij zich realiseerde dat zijn parachute niet opende, moet #ffffff;\">De missie van 30 juli 1943 is pas de vijfde die de 56th Fighter Group vanaf Station 365 bij Halesworth in Suffolk vliegt. De basis die slechts een goede 15 kilometer van de kust ligt, blijkt hierdoor veel beter geschikt voor de missies dan hun eerdere basis bij Horsham St. Faith in het meer noordelijk gelegen graafschap Norfolk. De verhuizing is aangevangen op 9 juli en in de tussentijd worden de P-47&#8217;s operationeel gehouden en verdeeld over drie vliegvelden in het zuiden van Engeland. Op 28 juli 1943 vertrekken de eerste P-47&#8217;s voor de eerste missie vanuit Halesworth. Robert Stover is \u00e9\u00e9n van de twaalf piloten van de 56th Fighter Group, die circa tachtig bommenwerpers moeten opvangen bij Dordrecht en daarna begeleiden via Burgh Haamstede, Zeeland richting Engeland. Er zijn geen vijandelijkheden en alle piloten keren veilig terug op Halesworth, hun nieuwe thuis. De volgende dag moeten er maar liefst twee missies gevlogen worden: in de morgen het begeleiden van bommenwerpers en in de vroege avond een zogenaamde &#8216;fighter-sweep&#8217; (het opsporen, of uit de tent lokken van vijandelijke jagers). Stover neemt deel aan de fighter sweep die waarbij het squadron in een lijn langs de kust vanaf Goeree-Overflakkee naar het Belgische Nieuwpoort vliegt. Onderweg worden enkele B-26 Marauders begeleid, maar verder blijkt ook deze missie niet heel spannend. In eerste instantie denkt men aan de P-47 Thunderbolt van 1LT Frederick D. Merritt. Vliegtuig en piloot zijn nooit teruggekeerd naar de basis in Engeland en volgens een rapport van die tijd, zou Merritt in de buurt van Goeree-Overflakkee gecrasht zijn. Een opgeloste \u2018Missing In Action\u2019 zaak hangt dan ook in de lucht. Kort na aanvang van de bergingswerkzaamheden stelt de bergingsdienst echter vast dat het hier niet om Merritts vliegtuig gaat. Na het traceren van de specifieke codes op de boordwapens blijkt het de Thunderbolt van Robert E. Stover te zijn. Nadat hij uit het vliegtuig springt, is het vliegtuig zo&#8217;n tien kilometer verderop nabij Oude-Tonge neergestort.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" wordt op de plaats waar het toestel de grond in sloeg, een monument onthuld ter nagedachtenis aan Robert Stover. Het is een gezamenlijk initiatief van Stichting WO2 Goeree-Overflakkee, de gemeente Oostflakkee en het Waterschap Hollandse Delta. Het monument bestaat uit een origineel propellorblad van het toestel, dat is geplaatst op een natuurstenen sokkel met inscriptie. De toenmalige gemeente Oostflakkee heeft zorggedragen voor de financi\u00ebn, terwijl Stichting WO2 Goeree-Overflakkee verantwoordelijk is voor de tekst en het ontwerp van het paneel. Monument en paneel zijn ter nagedachtenis aan Robert Stover die hier op 2 augustus 1943 met volledige militaire eer werd begraven. Het monument is een replica van het kruis dat op het huidige graf van Stover in Belgi\u00eb staat. Net na de oorlog is Stover, samen met de andere Amerikaanse vliegeniers die op het eiland Goeree-Overflakkee om het leven zijn gekomen, herbegraven op de Ardennes American Cemetery bij Neuville-en-Condroz in Belgi\u00eb.
