10 mei 1940, verschijnen er boven het luchtruim van Goeree-Overflakkee vliegtuigen met de kenmerkende zwarte hakenkruizen. Zij achtervolgen een Nederlands vliegtuig dat bovendien zwaar beschoten wordt. Later op deze dag wordt de Goeree-Overflakkeese bevolking al direct met neergehaalde toestellen en oorlogsleed geconfronteerd. Het lijkt aanvankelijk alleen maar spannend, waarbij de bevolking tamelijk na\u00efef naar buiten rent als zich een voorval voordoet. Hoe anders zou dat de komende vijf jaren worden\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Op de website \u2018Onrust in de lucht\u2019, een initiatief van stichting WO2GO, worden de verhalen verteld over de luchtoorlog boven Goeree-Overflakkee tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Een dusdanig groot en indrukwekkend hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van het eiland tijdens de oorlog, dat er voor gekozen is een geheel eigen website aan dit onderwerp te besteden. bommenwerper die vloog bij Bomber Command, maar is zeker niet de meest geproduceerde bommenwerper. Deze eer behoort namelijk toe aan de 2-motorige Vickers Wellington. Een prototype van dit toestel maakte reeds in 1936 een eerste testvlucht en vormde gedurende de eerste jaren van de oorlog de hoofdmacht in de vloot van bommenwerpers van de RAF. Het hoge aantal \u2018Wimpys\u2019, zoals de bijnaam van het toestel luidt, dat op en om Goeree-Overflakkee in de vroege oorlogsjaren zijn neergestort bevestigt dit dan ook. Zo ver bekend heeft \u00e9\u00e9n Wellington een geslaagde noodlanding gemaakt op het land nabij Ouddorp, twee maakten een noodlanding op een zandbank in de Grevelingen en het Haringvliet, vier anderen crashten in het water voor de kust.
