Hij groeide op met drie zussen aan de Molendijk 57. Na de lagere school ging hij, net als zijn vader, het land op \u2014 de twee werkten vaak samen. Toen het Nederlandse leger in augustus 1939 werd gemobiliseerd vanwege de dreiging vanuit Duitsland, moest ook Leen onder de wapenen. Hij werd ingedeeld bij de derde compagnie van het derde bataljon van het 14e Regiment Infanterie (3-III-14 R.I.) en gelegerd in het Noord-Brabantse Grave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In de nacht van 20 op 21 november 1939 liep Leen wacht bij de sluizen in de Maas. Op enig moment raakte hij, met zijn zware soldatenjas en het geweer nog op zijn schouder, te water en kwam terecht in een stuwkolk \u2014 hij verdronk. Zijn lichaam werd de volgende dag opgedregd; zijn polshorloge was blijven stilstaan op 1 uur. Leen stond bekend als een nuchtere, verstandige soldaat, wat het ongeval extra onbegrijpelijk maakte voor wie hem kenden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vader Cornelis reisde al de volgende dag, samen met zwager Matth. van der Vliet, onderwijzer te Herkingen, naar Grave \u2014 een smartelijke tocht in mobilisatietijd waarop niets meer te doen bleek. Op zaterdag 25 november 1939 werd Leendert Goedegebuur met militaire eer begraven op de Algemene Begraafplaats van Melissant; zijn regiment schonk de grafsteen. De belangstelling van het dorp was groot, en dominee Van Wingerden stond het gezin in de rouw bij. Het 14e Regiment Infanterie, waarbij ook Leendert diende, bestond grotendeels uit dienstplichtigen van de Zeeuwse en Zuid-Hollandse eilanden \u2014 waaronder Goeree-Overflakkee. Het regiment werd ingekwartierd bij de bevolking van Grave, aan het Maas-Waalkanaal, om er bruggen en sluizen te bewaken. In de omgeving werden gebieden ge\u00efnundeerd en versterkingen aangelegd, al lag de belangrijkste Nederlandse verdedigingslinie destijds verderop, bij de Grebbelinie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:
