Cornelis koos, net als zijn broer Laurus (machinist), voor een leven op het water: hij werd sleepbootkapitein. Op 9 oktober 1907 trouwde hij in Rotterdam met Johanna Herberta van Ballegoyen, afkomstig uit Nijmegen. Het echtpaar ging wonen aan de Westerkade in Rotterdam en kreeg zes kinderen, van wie er vier al op zeer jonge leeftijd overleden \u2014 de oudste nog geen anderhalve maand oud, de jongste maar 104 dagen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Als sleepbootkapitein voer Cornelis de binnenvaartroutes tussen Rotterdam en het Duitse Ruhrgebied \u2014 een vaargebied dat na de Duitse bezetting van Nederland in mei 1940 onder strikt Duits toezicht kwam te staan, met verduisteringsvoorschriften die de havens en kades &#8217;s nachts in het donker hielden. In de vroege ochtend van 8 april 1941 werd Cornelis, 65 jaar oud, dood aangetroffen in het Vinkekanal aan de Jordingstra\u00dfe in Duisburg \u2014 een deel van de uitgestrekte Duisburgse binnenhaven, destijds de grootste van Europa. Cornelis werd aanvankelijk begraven op de Waldfriedhof in Duisburg-Wanheimerort. Pas in 1955, veertien jaar na zijn dood, werd hij door de Oorlogsgravenstichting opgegraven en op 16 juni van dat jaar herbegraven op het Nederlandse ereveld aan de Stoffeler Friedhof in D\u00fcsseldorf, waar hij nog altijd rust.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zijn vrouw Johanna Herberta overleed op 6 december 1971 in Amersfoort, 90 jaar oud. Een van de ingrijpendste daarvan was de verplichte verduistering: havens, kades en schepen mochten &#8217;s nachts geen licht meer tonen, uit angst voor geallieerde bommenwerpers. Voor mannen die hun werk \u2014 aan- en afmeren, laden en lossen, het overstappen tussen schip en wal \u2014 altijd al in het donker en vaak in weer en wind moesten doen, maakte dat een toch al gevaarlijk beroep nog onvoorspelbaarder. Cornelis Koote, sleepbootkapitein uit Herkingen, verdronk in de vroege ochtend van 8 april 1941 in een kanaal in de haven van Duisburg \u2014 geen directe oorlogshandeling, maar wel een dodelijk ongeval in de haven van een bezet land, in de uitoefening van een beroep dat door diezelfde oorlog gevaarlijker was geworden.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close
