bij Melissant, als oudste zoon van landbouwer Pieter Dirk Sieling en Adriana Johanna Sieling-van der Poel. Al in de meidagen van 1940 raakte hij als jongeman betrokken bij het verzet: toen een Engelse tweedekker neerstreek in de polder Oud-Herkingen, ging Dirk er direct op af en kreeg van de burgemeester toestemming om de vliegeniers per auto naar Rotterdam te brengen. Vandaar reisde hij met zijn broer Leen, die er studeerde, via Hellevoetsluis per roeiboot terug naar Flakkee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op 13 juli 1942 kwamen Duitse militairen naar de boerderij om vader Pieter Dirk te arresteren; omdat hij die dag op Tholen was, namen ze in zijn plaats zoon Dirk mee. Dirk werd gevangengezet in het gijzelaarskamp Beekvliet bij Sint-Michielsgestel, waar hij, tot zijn geluk, les kreeg van een directeur van de HBS in Terneuzen \u2014 waardoor hij na zijn vrijlating op 6 april 1943 alsnog examen kon doen. Later moest het hele gezin onderduiken: vader en zonen Dirk en Cor doken onder bij familie in Rotterdam, terwijl moeder Sieling en de jongste dochter Anke (10 jaar) enige tijd gevangen werden gezet, 400;\">In Rotterdam sloot Dirk zich aan bij een knokploeg onder leiding van &#8220;Paul&#8221; (S. Esmeijer) en nam deel aan gewapende akties \u2014 van overvallen op distributiekantoren voor voedselbonnen tot de bevrijding van gevangenen, onder wie ter dood veroordeelden, uit de gevangenis aan de Noordsingel. Omdat hij als voormalig gegijzelde nog steeds gesignaleerd stond, kreeg hij in 1943 via een schoolvriend een persoonsbewijs op naam van een bestaande, argeloze plaatsgenoot: Anthonie Bakelaar uit Den Bommel. Onder die naam is Dirk tot zijn dood geregistreerd gebleven \u2014 pas na de oorlog, bij nader onderzoek door het Rode Kruis, bleek dat de echte Anthonie Bakelaar zelf nooit was gearresteerd of weggevoerd. Op 20 augustus 1944 werd Dirk tijdens een Duitse controle in een trein bij Amsterdam gearresteerd. Nog wist hij een briefje met de tekst &#8220;ik ben gepakt&#8221; naar buiten te smokkelen, dat zijn familie bereikte.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Via kamp Amersfoort \u2014 waar hij, de bronnen spreken elkaar hier iets tegen, minstens \u00e9\u00e9n ontsnappingspoging ondernam voordat hij opnieuw werd gegrepen \u2014 werd Dirk naar concentratiekamp Neuengamme bij Hamburg gedeporteerd. Daar overleed hij, 24 jaar oud, in de vroege ochtend van 11 maart 1945 om 3.50 uur \u2014 zijn offici\u00eble overlijdensakte noemt dysenterie als doodsoorzaak, een rechtstreeks gevolg van de erbarmelijke kampomstandigheden. Zijn lichaam werd in het kampcrematorium verast. Pas op 29 mei 1945 kregen zijn ouders bericht: een kort, kil telegram dat enkel meldde dat hun zoon was overleden en gecremeerd \u2014 het droeve nieuws was hen via via al eerder ter ore gekomen, via een lotgenoot uit Neuengamme aan wie Dirk kort voor zijn dood in vertrouwen had verteld wie hij werkelijk was. Aanvankelijk moesten gevangenen er vooral zware dwangarbeid verrichten in een steenfabriek, later groeide het uit tot een netwerk van tientallen buitenkampen. Van de ruim 100.000 mensen die er gevangen zaten, kwam naar schatting de helft om \u2014 door uitputting, ondervoeding, ziekten als tyfus en dysenterie, en mishandeling. Onder hen ook enkele honderden Nederlanders, velen van hen actief in het verzet. In de laatste oorlogsweken werden overlevenden ge\u00ebvacueerd; een deel van hen kwam om bij latere scheepsrampen in de L\u00fcbecker Bocht.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style
