Hij was gehuwd met Kommertje Vroegindeweij. Als dienstplichtig soldaat, ingedeeld bij de 1e Compagnie, III Bataljon, 14e Regiment Infanterie, was hij ordonnans bij de verdediging van de kanaalbrug te Den Dungen tegen een Duitse verkenningseenheid. Hart-Park te Den Dungen, en na een exhumatie op 3 augustus 1957 (in verband met de aanleg van een verkeersplein) definitief herbegraven op het Nederlands Ereveld Loenen. Bij Rotterdam, Den Haag en op diverse vliegvelden \u2014 waaronder Ypenburg \u2014 probeerden Duitse valschermjagers en luchtlandingstroepen snel belangrijke doelen te veroveren; het Nederlandse leger bood, met beperkte middelen, verbeten tegenstand. Na vijf dagen zware gevechten, waarbij ook het bombardement op Rotterdam een beslissende rol speelde, capituleerde Nederland op 15 mei 1940. Bij de meidagen van 1940 kwamen in totaal ruim 2.300 Nederlandse militairen om het leven, verspreid over het hele land \u2014 van de vliegvelden rond Den Haag tot de Brabantse kanalen en
