Hij overleed op 23 januari 1945 in Tjimahi, op West-Java, destijds een van de grootste Japanse internerings- en krijgsgevangenkampen in voormalig Nederlands-Indi\u00eb. Hij ligt begraven op het Nederlands ereveld Leuwigajah te Cimahi.<\/p>\n<p>Pieter was een zoon van Cornelis de Bruin (geb. 18 juni 1875 te Dirksland) en Anneke van Steenbergen (geb. 29 maart 1867 te Gameren); hij was ongehuwd. Hij diende als beroepsmilitair bij de Koloniale Reserve van het KNIL (stamboeknummer 41383): op 30 maart 1925 vertrok hij naar Rijswijk, op 26 augustus 1926 naar Nijmegen voor zijn opleiding, op 2 mei 1933 keerde hij kortstondig terug uit Malang, en op 31 oktober 1933 vertrok hij definitief naar Nederlands-Indi\u00eb. Duizenden Nederlanders die er woonden of dienden, belandden na de bezetting van maart 1942 in dit soort kampen, waar honger, ziekte en dwangarbeid het dagelijks leven bepaalden; vooral in de laatste oorlogsjaren liep de sterfte sterk op.
