Het gezin bestaat uit vader, moeder en 7 kinderen. Ondanks dat de familie al voor de oorlog 2 kinderen op zeer jonge leeftijd heeft verloren, zijn ze de eerste jaren van de oorlog relatief goed doorgekomen. Hoe abrupt en ruw zal dit echter omslaan als hun leven totaal overhoop wordt gegooid, wanneer het noodlot toeslaat op 28 februari 1943\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Het is rond de klok van twee uur op die bewuste noodlottige \u00a0zondagmiddag, als de dan 21-jarige Arie de Bruin zijn broertjes Kees, Rinus en Gerard samen met hun vriendje Beije Soldaat er op uit ziet trekken. De oudste van het gezin weet dat er twee weken geleden een voorwerp op het strand is aangespoeld, wat lijkt op een boei, maar zomaar ook een explosief kan zijn. Het is tenslotte oorlogstijd en voorzichtigheid is ten allen tijde geboden. Hij roept de vier dan ook met klem na, het aangespoelde projectiel met rust te laten. De jongens zwaaien nog even ter goedkeuring en vervolgen hun weg richting het buitengors.<\/p>\n<p>Het is bijna zes uur in de avond en de schemering valt in, als de jongens nog steeds niet thuis zijn. Ze blijven wel vaker wat langer weg, maar een angstig gevoel bekruipt Arie dat ze toch met het aangespoelde projectiel aan de slag zijn gegaan. Met die gedachte in het achterhoofd, spoedt hij meteen naar het gors, waar hij voor het laatst het projectiel heeft gezien. Eenmaal op de buitendijk aangekomen, vlakbij de bewuste locatie, aanschouwt hij een verschrikkelijk tafereel\u2026 Op het strand ziet hij een levenloos lichaam liggen en iets verderop nog drie. Hij rent als eerste naar de drie en daar aangekomen stort zijn wereld in; het blijken zijn broertjes Kees, Rinus en Gerard te zijn. Uit het leven gerukt door de explosie van een aangespoelde bodemmijn. Een wapen gemaakt om dood en verderf te zaaien voor een vijand op zee. Niet voor kinderen die spelen op een strand van Goeree-Overflakkee. Het lichaam van Beije is zwaar verminkt, waaruit blijkt dat hij degene is die de mijn heeft beroerd. Vijf kinderen verliezen\u2026 Wie kan zoiets aan? De gifbeker is echter nog niet leeg. Broer Arie wordt namelijk in december 1944 opgeroepen voor de zogenaamde Arbeitseinsatz, de verplichte tewerkstelling in Nazi-Duitsland. Hij wordt ziek en keer onverhoopt terug naar huis. Hulp mag echter niet meer baten. Hij overlijdt op 5 januari 1945 aan de gevolgen van difterie, een zeer ernstige en besmettelijke ziekte, veroorzaakt door een bacterie. Dusdanig besmettelijk, dat zijn jongere zusje Lientje ook ziek is geworden.
