><p>Gedenkplaat voor de Canadese soldaat Trooper Walter Frank Watson Veness (1923&#8211;1945), die op 22 januari 1945 in dit ziekenhuis overleed aan verwondingen opgelopen bij de Duitse aanval op Fort Sabina. Onthuld op 4 mei 2017 op initiatief van Stichting WO2GO.<\/p>\n<p>Veness diende bij de 12th Manitoba Dragoons, R.C.A.C. In de nacht van 21 op 22 januari 1945 werd Fort Sabina bij Heijningen &#8212; vlak bij de frontlinie tussen het al bevrijde Noord-Brabant en het nog bezette Goeree-Overflakkee &#8212; overvallen door de Duitse Marine Einsatz Kommando 40. Veness raakte daarbij zwaargewond door een buikschot, werd gevangengenomen en via de haven van Herkingen naar het ziekenhuis van Dirksland gebracht, waar hij dezelfde dag aan zijn verwondingen overleed. Hij was 21 jaar oud, geboren op 20 december 1923 in Edmonton, Alberta. Veness ligt begraven op de Canadese Oorlogsbegraafplaats in Bergen op Zoom.
