Op 3 september 1936 tekende Eeuwit vrijwillig voor 5 jaar als koloniaal en op 12 november datzelfde jaar werd hij geschikt bevonden voor uitzending naar Nederlands Oost Indie, waarvoor hij een premie kreeg van 100 gulden.<\/p>\n<p>Op 23 december 1936 stapte hij op de SS J.P. Coen en vertrok naar zijn eindbestemming Batavia, al waar hij op 24 januari 1937 aankwam als zijnde brigadier-marechaussee der infanterie. Een jaar later op 2 februari 1938 trad hij in het huwelijk met Leida Koning, een inlandse, geboren op 25 december 1919 te Soekaboemi. Ze kregen twee kinderen: dochter Aagje Willemine (&#8216;Atie&#8217;) Bal, geboren op 16 augustus 1938 te Buitenzorg, en zoon Gerard Louis Bal, geboren op 13 maart 1941 te Madjalengka.<\/p>\n<p>Na de aanval van Japan op Pearl Harbour op 7 december 1941 verklaarde ook Nederland de oorlog aan Japan en begon de oorlog om Nederlands-Indie. Echter op 8 maart 1942 moest het leger al capituleren en ook op deze dag werd Eeuwit Bal\u00a0 krijgsgevangene te Bodjong Pitjoeng Tjandjoer op het eiland Java. Hij werd later gedeporteerd naar een Thaikamp te Birma en is daar overleden op 27 december 1943 aan een longontsteking. Als krijgsgevangene (POW-nummer 91912) was hij op 6 november 1942 van Java naar Thailand getransporteerd.<\/p>\n<p>Brigadier-marechaussee der infanterie Eeuwit Bal rust in vrede op de begraafplaats Thambuysayat in Birma in vak D2, rij F, nummer 13.<\/p>\n<p>Op de Nieuwe begraafplaats aan de Staakweg te Dirksland staat een &#8216;Indie-monument&#8217; met daarbij een gedenkplaat ter ere van Eeuwit Bal. De 9-jarige Ati en 6-jarige Gerard bleven achter als wezen. Voor de aanleg werden circa 60.000 geallieerde krijgsgevangenen en naar schatting een kwart miljoen Aziatische dwangarbeiders ingezet, onder extreem zware omstandigheden: tropische ziekten, ondervoeding, mishandeling en uitputting eisten een enorme tol. Naar schatting kwam ruim een kwart van de krijgsgevangenen \u2014 en een nog veel groter deel van de Aziatische dwangarbeiders \u2014 om het leven tijdens de bouw. Veel slachtoffers, onder wie ook Nederlandse militairen van Goeree-Overflakkee, liggen begraven op de oorlogsbegraafplaatsen langs het traject, zoals Kanchanaburi in
