wo2go-mon-story-text'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Gedenksteen voor de Amerikaanse jachtvlieger kolonel Arman Peterson (1915&#8211;1943), commandant van de 78th Fighter Group, neergeschoten boven Goedereede op 1 juli 1943. Hij lag hier van 5 juli 1943 tot 15 maart 1946 begraven, graf 269.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson vloog met zijn Republic P-47D Thunderbolt (42-7948) boven Schouwen toen zijn toestel op 1 juli 1943 tijdens een luchtgevecht werd geraakt. Hij sprong met zijn parachute uit het toestel, maar een Duitse militair op de grond opende het vuur op de weerloze vlieger, waardoor de parachute scheurde. Peterson stortte vervolgens te pletter op een akker aan de Klaverseweg bij Goedereede en brak daarbij zijn nek. Zijn lichaam werd via het Krankenhaus van Goedereede naar de Algemene Begraafplaats gebracht, waar hij op 5 juli 1943 in graf 269 werd begraven. Op 15 maart 1946 werd hij door de Amerikaanse gravendienst opgegraven en herbegraven op de militaire begraafplaats Neuville in Belgi\u00eb; later is hij overgebracht naar een particuliere begraafplaats in zijn geboortestaat Arizona.
