wo2go-mon-story-text'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Plaquette op de plek van het geboortehuis van journalist en schrijver Willem Walraven (1887&#8211;1943), overleden in het Japanse interneringskamp Kesilir bij Banjoewangi.<\/p>\n<p>Willem Walraven groeide op in Dirksland als zoon van een venter\/kruidenier en koesterde al als kind een fascinatie voor taal. Na omzwervingen via Rotterdam en Canada vertrok hij in 1915 naar Nederlands-Indi\u00eb, waar hij als telegrafist en boekhouder werkte en vanaf 1925 uitgroeide tot een gevreesd en gerespecteerd journalist bij De Indische Courant, bekend om zijn scherpe maatschappijkritiek. Hij trouwde met een Soendanese vrouw, Itih, en kreeg negen kinderen, maar bleef zijn leven lang worstelen met heimwee naar Nederland. Zijn postuum uitgegeven brieven worden literair wel vergeleken met het werk van Tsjechov.
