Hij woonde aan de Voornkaai 23 en had een jongere broer, Jacob Leonard, die later in Nederlands-Indi\u00eb trouwde en na de oorlog eveneens naar Nederland terugkeerde.<\/p>\n<p>Als ongewapend Landstormsoldaat werd Van Hemert ingezet in Nederlands-Indi\u00eb. Op 18 september 1944 raakte hij vermist op zee, tijdens een gedwongen scheepstransport van Java naar Sumatra \u2014 bevestigd door zowel het dossier van de Oorlogsgravenstichting als dat van het Rode Kruis. De plaats, ten zuiden van Benkoelen aan de westkust van Sumatra, en de omstandigheden komen sterk overeen met een van de grootste scheepsrampen van de oorlog in die wateren, al noemt geen van de archiefstukken de naam van het schip.<\/p>\n<p>Omdat zijn lichaam nooit werd geborgen, kreeg Arnoldus van Hemert geen vast graf. Zijn vader overleed in 1951; zijn moeder verhuisde in de jaren vijftig naar De Bilt. Pas in 1962, bijna twintig jaar na zijn verdwijning, deed de Oorlogsgravenstichting opnieuw navraag bij zijn broer in Den Haag.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close content
