Op 24 februari 1944 vertrok het gezin uit Ooltgensplaat naar Schiedam, met hun derde broer Job. Op advies van een neef trokken de drie broers op 15 maart 1944 door naar Putten, waar het platteland beter in de voedselvoorziening voorzag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam kwam terecht bij de familie Simons aan de Hooiweg en werkte op hun bedrijf; Teunis, schilder van beroep, kreeg werk in een kruidentuin aan de Grietweg; Job vond onderdak bij C. van de Kamp aan de Huinen. Ze woonden zo&#8217;n vijf kilometer van elkaar, maar zagen elkaar op zondag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op 1 oktober 1944 was Job al vroeg gaan melken en kwam daardoor te laat voor de kerk \u2014 een vertraging die hem later zijn leven zou redden. Die ochtend voerden de Duitsers in Putten een van de beruchtste razzia&#8217;s van de oorlog uit. Job vluchtte met buurtgenoten het bos in en bleef schuilen tot de avond van 2 oktober, toen 660 Puttenaren \u2014 onder wie zijn beide broers Adam en Teunis, en hun dorpsgenoot Johannis Overbeeke \u2014 werden weggevoerd. Van de 660 weggevoerden zouden er 540 niet terugkeren.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam van der Veer overleed op 22 november 1944, om 03.20 uur, in het concentratiekamp Ladelund aan dysenterie \u2014 bevestigd door ooggetuige Gerrit Simons, die tot het laatst bij hem kon blijven. Omdat Ladelund een buitenkamp was van het concentratiekamp Neuengamme, werd zijn stoffelijk overschot daar gecremeerd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vader en moeder Van der Veer keerden begin juli 1945 terug naar Ooltgensplaat om het huis aan de Stoofstraat klaar te maken voor de terugkeer van hun zonen \u2014 &#8217;s avonds lieten zij zelfs de deur open voor het geval de jongens laat thuis zouden komen.
