Zijn moeder was al overleden; zijn vader werkte als tuinman bij notaris Akkermans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op woensdag 29 november 1944 was Hendrik aan de Spuidijk bezig aardappelen onder de zogeheten &#8220;winterrok&#8221; te doen \u2014 een dubbele laag stro en aarde ter bescherming tegen de vorst. Er stond iemand bij hem te kijken. Op een gegeven moment werden vanaf Noord-Brabant weer enkele granaten afgevuurd, waarvan er \u00e9\u00e9n in de buurt van de beide mannen ontplofte. Door een granaatscherf raakte Hendrik zwaar gewond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Er werd onmiddellijk contact opgenomen met het ziekenhuis te Dirksland. Met de ziekenauto werd Hendrik in Ooltgensplaat opgehaald en naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Dat beeld had hij kennelijk nog voor ogen: tijdens zijn laatste levensdagen in het ziekenhuis verzocht hij zijn familie nadrukkelijk hem eventueel in Dirksland te laten begraven. &#8220;Wat u later met me doet, moet u dan maar weten&#8221;, zei hij berustend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hendrik den Braber werd aanvankelijk op de Algemene Begraafplaats te Dirksland begraven, maar op 22 oktober 1945 is zijn stoffelijk overschot alsnog overgebracht naar de Algemene Begraafplaats van Ooltgensplaat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hendrik was van beroep los werkman en lid van de Nederlands Hervormde gemeente; naast zijn twee broers had hij ook drie zussen. Uit het latere onderzoek van de Oorlogsgravenstichting blijkt dat Hendrik den Braber politiek betrouwbaar was. Grote delen van de eilandbevolking werden ge\u00ebvacueerd naar hoger gelegen, nog niet overstroomde gebieden, terwijl wie bleef met granaatvuur, voedselnood en verwoeste akkers te maken kreeg. Hendrik den Braber werkte in deze periode nog op het land bij de Spuidijk, waar hij op 29 november 1944 door een granaatscherf zwaar gewond raakte; hij overleed op 6 december 1944 in het ziekenhuis
