Hij was landarbeider van beroep. Op 20 januari 1942 trouwde hij met Maartje van Hoven en samen kregen zij twee kinderen, Johannes en Cornelia. Op 18 april 1942 verhuisde hij van Goedereede naar Dirksland (Gasthuissteeg A 35) \u2014 niet, zoals eerder op deze pagina stond, naar Duitsland. Volgens de Oorlogsgravenstichting, op basis van ooggetuigenverklaringen, overleed hij aan een beklemde breuk; de mondelinge overlevering dat hij te veel zou hebben gegeten na de plundering van een koekjesfabriek wordt door geen van de geraadpleegde archiefstukken bevestigd. In het nog bezette deel van Nederland \u2014 waaronder Goeree-Overflakkee, dat tot mei 1945 onder Duits gezag bleef \u2014 dreef de bezetter daarom op grote schaal mannen tussen ruwweg 17 en 40 jaar naar Duitsland voor dwangarbeid: sommigen via een offici\u00eble oproep, velen anderen bij razzia&#8217;s waarbij ze van straat of uit hun huis werden gehaald. Vaak met weinig meer dan de kleren die ze droegen, werden ze per trein afgevoerd naar fabrieken, mijnen en bouwplaatsen voor het herstel van bombardementsschade. Voor de Flakkeese dorpen vond de grootste van deze golven plaats in december 1944; van de mannen die werden weggevoerd, keerden niet allen levend
